My Journey through Trauma to Prenatal Yoga and Motherhood
I didn’t start out interested in prenatal yoga or even yoga. I was a life-long runner when I moved to Guatemala City in 2005. Because it was not always safe to run outside, I joined a gym, and this is where I began a regular yoga practice.
In addition to the ways this practice healed my physical body, I began to notice that it also offered me the space to safely be present to the sensations in my body and allowed me to feel many of the emotions I had been avoiding most of my adult life. As a survivor of both sexual and domestic violence, yoga was instrumental in shifting the way I related to my body, my heart and to others.
In 2009 I returned to the U.S., and I became a registered yoga teacher with the desire to bring this profound practice to others who had experienced trauma (both sexual and physical abuse specifically) and continued to seek out training that equipped me to teach in a trauma-informed capacity.
I believe that my background as an athlete as well as a domestic violence counselor and a high school teacher led me on a journey to establish a style that is empowering, safe for both physical and emotional healing, challenging and inclusive.
Since 2009 I have been teaching to many different populations, and I began teaching prenatal yoga with Ma Yoga® in late 2014 after the loss of two pregnancies. In 2015, my daughter Luisa was born, and I entered the journey of motherhood. I love being able to support women during this raw time of their lives.
These years of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood have been the most confronting, empowering and joyful years of my life and yoga has helped me manage and embrace it all.
