Prenatal and Mom Yoga

Always check with your healthcare provider before doing any exercise.

That said, Ma Yoga® is alignment based, which means it helps the muscles and bones move in the direction they naturally want to go. This means instead of overstretching we stabilize joints; instead of over-efforting we relax tense muscles; and and instead of being passive, we strengthen the muscles that we need to help us carry baby, inside and out. And it also often means relieving aches and pains!

If instead you feel that something is hurting more when you are doing the yoga, the best thing to do is find a local yoga teacher to help you with your alignment. You can also contact us to schedule an affordable Skype one-on-one session so we can help make sure your yoga is helping your body rather than increasing an existing misalignment.

If you have a specific question about a practice, you can reach out directly to the teacher. Right on the same page as each video is a contact form, so you can asks questions of the teacher directly – and submit requests!

You can also ask questions of our teachers in the Ma Yoga Mamas Facebook group, and get different perspectives. Yoga teachers love opportunities to help people with yoga so please ask away!

That said, once you get the ok, you are in great hands with our alignment-based yoga. Each pose is simple an opportunity to find our natural stability and freedom by engaging our muscles and our core, finding the curves of our spine, and making space. Since our teachers are all highly trained in therapeutics, our yoga should help make your aches and pains better.

If for some reason it makes it feel worse, it’s important to get some one-on-one help with the yoga – whether in your hometown or with us. Just reach out and we’ll hook you up.

Yes. Studies show that prenatal yoga is one of the most safe and effective forms of prenatal yoga – even when it comes in the form of booklets and videos (Midwifery, 2010).

The point of prenatal yoga is to make space for baby. When we move with awareness, breathing deeply and listening to our body, we are not only giving ourselves a great gift but we’re making space for baby to move and grow. Plus, we’re connecting with baby in a loving way that will just build over time. Please click here to read more about prenatal yoga.

Prenatal yoga is great for people who are just dreaming of getting pregnant, those who are past their due date, and everything in between.

Every class is taught to beginners, with options for more advanced work for those who have been doing it for a while.

Think about it this way: we move all day, twisting and reaching and bending this way and that. Prenatal Yoga simply takes these movements and invites us to do them slowly, with more awareness of breathing deeply, making space for baby, and doing what’s best for our spine in each moment.

If you’ve never done yoga before, start with the Beginner classes, so you can learn the basic principles that will make your practice deeply beneficial.

As soon as your bleeding has stopped and your doctor gives you the ok to move, it’s fine to do yoga.

There are also restorative poses that you can do to provide a gentle opening for the body by lying over cushions and blankets.

Once you have the ok – the sooner the better! When your little one starts walking around, it gets harder to have your own practice (but fun to do it together!).
